How can you check for mileage fraud on a used car? Unfortunately, some people tamper with the mileage displayed on the dashboard to make it appear lower than it actually is, making the car seem "younger". The display may have been electronically tampered with. Visual checks (wear on pedals, steering wheel, seats) provide clues but not certainties. The real certainty (the "smoking gun") comes from using an OBD scanner connected to the car's port, accessing the ECU, and reading all electronic modules. The engine ECU records the actual mileage; other modules, such as ABS, airbags, and gearbox, may have independent mileage memories. If the values do not match those on the dashboard, then you are facing fraud. Warning signs include unusually low mileage for the age of the car; internal wear inconsistent with the declared mileage; service book with gaps or suspicious stamps (or even absent); inconsistent or missing invoices.
