How the EAT8 Gearbox Works

The EAT8 gearbox (8 speeds) installed in the PSA group (Peugeot and Citroen) is an advanced gearbox as it evolved from the EAT6 (6 speeds). It is based on technology developed on a torque converter, which previously had 6 speeds but now has 2 additional ones with the update. This gearbox is also used for engines with power up to 180 hp (2.0 HDi in Peugeot 3008/Peugeot 5008/Citroen C5 Aircross) that support this gearbox as standard; it is an optional extra (ranging from £1,500 to £2,000) for the 1.5 HDi engines with 130 hp or the 2.0 petrol with 130 hp (Euro 6dTemp). This gearbox offers a much smarter setup (thanks to the torque converter), has a lighter weight and smaller volume, and there is no clutch with the gear wheel (smoother engine operation). Thanks to a company and software developed by the Peugeot/Citroen group, it has been possible to develop or model it to optimise its use and performance on group models. This very functional system, equipped with the classic modes of an automatic gearbox, such as N (neutral), P (park), D (drive), and R (reverse), provides excellent functionality, a great driving feel, and especially the possibility to accessorise vehicles that have received positive feedback from the market over time. It makes them more accessible even for those who, in previous years, sought models that were not particularly expensive but offered comfort (delegating the management of their driving to the artificial intelligence of an automatic gearbox). To enjoy it to the fullest, not only in driving pleasure (it is not designed for sportiness), but it is a gearbox that was specifically intended to enhance the usability of the vehicle not only for those who may not be comfortable with or find the third pedal (clutch) cumbersome, but also for those who want an eighth gear capable of handling a significant weight and power, thus making the use of the vehicle more enjoyable not just in a classic condition, without using a manual gearbox (vehicle at a speed of 81 mph on a straight road), having more gears, with intelligence that supports the choice of a suitable ratio based on our driving style, especially on highly regarded group vehicles, both for the sportier aesthetic lines (Peugeot) and for the softer, more enveloping lines, particularly with a bit more comfort and material research characteristics (fabrics and aesthetic features) that make the choice very sought after and highly valued by the national automotive community.
