For the engine to produce power, its pistons must rotate and the combustion chamber valves open and close. The pistons are connected to a crankshaft, which sends power through the transmission and differential to the wheels, meanwhile, the valves move thanks to a rotating camshaft. However, this operation requires precise timing. If the intake valve is left open for too long, air escapes and power decreases. And if too much air escapes, the mini-explosion that creates the energy won't happen. Then, to keep the crankshaft and camshafts in sync, both are connected via the timing belt. Regardless, at some point, due to stretching and wear, they will need to be replaced. In general, the average replacement time for a timing belt is after 120,000 kilometres.
