When to Change the Timing Belt on the 1.3 CDTi Engine

For the engine to produce power, its pistons must rotate and the valves in the combustion chamber must open and close. The pistons are connected to a crankshaft, which sends power through the gearbox and differential to the wheels, while the valves move thanks to a rotating camshaft. However, this operation requires precise timing. If the intake valve remains open too long, air escapes and power decreases. If too much air escapes, the mini-explosion that creates energy will not occur. Therefore, to keep the crankshaft and camshafts synchronised, both are connected by the timing belt. At some point, due to stretching and wear, they will need to be replaced. Generally, the average replacement interval for a timing belt is after 75,000 miles.
