How to Choose Between Different Types of Engine Coolant

Let’s clarify once and for all the differences between various types of coolants; to do this, you need to understand the distinctions. In any case, it is a mixture of distilled water and glycol. Ethylene glycol is a chemical preparation with strong antifreeze properties, known since the mid-1800s. It comes in three colours. The most common is blue, which was created to prevent the water from becoming too acidic; the pink one serves the same purpose, with the added benefit of protecting metal parts and is made entirely from organic material. The yellow one is the most recent and is compatible with the pink one, allowing you to mix them. However, you should not mix the blue with the pink; if you have no other option, you may do so, but change it completely at the first service because the two chemical components are incompatible and can cause damage to the engine over time. Why is it always better to use glycol with water? Because glycol protects the components, while plain water causes them to oxidise, and it does not have the antifreeze function that glycol provides, which prevents freezing at -20°C or -40°C and boils at 120°C instead of 100°C like water. Additionally, ice tends to expand, which can break the engine block or cylinder head.

How to Check the Oil Level on a Jeep Renegade?
