Model: (Various brands) Various
Part: Crankshaft RPM sensor
Operation: What are and how do the sensors for the crankshaft and camshaft position work?

In this video, we talk about the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor. The crankshaft position sensor communicates the information about the engine speed and the position of the crankshaft to the engine control unit, in order to know exactly where the pistons are located inside the cylinder. It is an inductive sensor, if it has two wires, that mounts a permanent magnet, which interacts with the pulley, which is a gear fixed on the crankshaft, with two or more consecutive missing teeth. In this way, the sensor detects the position and sends it to the control unit, which can make its calculations and determine the engine speed (RPM) and its velocity. If it has three wires, it utilizes the Hall effect. If the crankshaft position sensor doesn't work, the engine may not start, or it may start while storing a fault code, such as P0335. If it malfunctions, it can cause poor ignition, high fuel consumption, and irregular idling. The causes could be internal short circuits in the sensor or in the power supply cable, or problems with the gear. As for the camshaft position sensor, it essentially performs the same function, but it is related to the camshaft; it provides confirmation and additional control compared to the crankshaft position sensor alone, informing the control unit about what each individual cylinder is doing. The operating principle is the same, but the gear is smaller and has fewer teeth. It works with the Hall effect system, and the symptoms of a damaged sensor are similar to those of the crankshaft sensor. The generated error code is P0340.
