If this component fails, a type of emulsion formed by oil, brown in colour, will be found in the radiator expansion tank. As a primary consequence, the head gasket becomes burnt. In these cases, oil and coolant mix, which in a properly functioning system should flow through two separate and sealed circuits. One reason for the exchanger's failure is the use of water instead of coolant. Water causes oxidation of the plates, leading to the mixing of the two fluids that should always remain separate.
