Measure the battery voltage with the engine off. Using a digital multimeter, set the dial to direct current 20 Volts, place the red probe on the positive terminal and the black probe on the negative terminal, and check the voltage. Now start the vehicle and check the charging voltage generated by the alternator.

Reposition the probes, and now the voltage is significantly higher. You have confirmed that the alternator is charging correctly.
