What to Do If the Windscreen Washer Pump on a Volkswagen or Skoda Is Not Working

The procedure described refers to a car with the washer fluid reservoir located behind the left front wing, which is a common position on many models from the Volkswagen group. Before disassembly, the absence of noise from the motor tells us there is a problem, but this could be a simple issue like a blown fuse: locate it by referring to the user manual of your car. Test the fuse, and if it is blown, replace it. If it is intact, then the problem is almost certainly the pump itself. You need to remove the left front wheel and lift the car on that side. Remove all screws securing the wing, so you can move it to access the washer fluid reservoir, which needs to be moved. The pump is directly fitted into the reservoir, so if it is full, all the fluid will spill out when you remove it. The pump has two outlets; one for the front circuit and one for the rear, disconnect them taking care not to mix them up (mark them). Disconnect the electrical connector and extract the pump. Install it with its gasket, insert the tubes (ensuring not to reverse them), connect the connector, and before reassembling everything, do a functionality test. If all is well, fill the reservoir with fluid and reassemble the wheel arch. You’re done.
