How to change the engine oil and filter in the Volkswagen Golf

The procedure for the Volkswagen Golf. Before starting, park the car on a level surface and secure it, work with the engine warm and use axle stands or a ramp; protect your hands and eyes and prepare a large container, as the oil drain can be substantial.

To access the oil sump, work from underneath and, if present, remove the lower protection by unscrewing the fasteners.

Once the area is clear, position the container under the drain plug, loosen the plug and let the oil drain completely. When the drain is finished, clean the plug seat and close it using a good condition or new gasket/washer, tightening without forcing and following the manufacturer's specifications.

Next, proceed to replace the oil filter. Depending on the engine fitted to the Golf, the filter may be in a housing with an internal element and seals, or in another configuration: the important thing is to remove the old element, clean the seat, replace any O-rings/seals, and fit the new filter correctly in position.

Secure the filter housing firmly, avoiding excessive tightening. At this point, top up with oil that meets the specification for your engine, pouring gradually and checking the level.

Start the engine for a few seconds, turn it off and wait for the oil to settle, then recheck the level and ensure there are no leaks from the filter area and the drain plug. Complete the level if necessary, refit the lower protection and do a final check after a short drive.
