How to Replace the Starter Motor on a Volkswagen Golf

Model: Volkswagen Golf Golf IV, MK 4, Golf 4 - Years 1997-2003

Before you can start, open the bonnet of your Volkswagen Golf. The starter motor is located on the lower right side of the engine block. Begin by removing the battery and its support tray by simply disconnecting the two terminals and removing the securing bolts. This will give you access to the starter motor. Next, disconnect the electrical connector, then unscrew and remove the securing bolts. This will free the starter motor, which you can then remove, completing the disassembly. To install the new starter motor and reassemble the battery, simply reverse these steps, and the replacement will be complete.
