Replacing Gear Shift Controls on the Steering Wheel

Model: Volkswagen Golf MK 5, Golf 5, Golf V - Years 2003-2008

The first task is to detach the airbag: using a mirror makes it easier to access the securing springs, which can then be released by levering with a small flathead screwdriver. Next, remove the screws securing the switch panels on the steering wheel and disconnect the corresponding plug. Now, pull out the connector that secures the gear shift panel to the electronic circuit to separate them (be careful with the spring).
Then, attach the spring to the new gear shift lever, connect the circuit, and insert the connector. Refit the controls onto the steering wheel and reconnect the airbag.
