How to Replace the Key Battery on a Volkswagen

Replacing the battery in a Volkswagen key is done in the same way for models such as Golf, Jetta, Passat, and Rabbit. To open the key shell, first, rotate the metal key around its pivot to free up the space for its housing. Once done, use a screwdriver to separate the two halves of the shell. On one side, you will have the metal key element, and on the other side, the remote control element. Take this second element and, using a small screwdriver, pry it open along the perimeter of the slot. This gives you access to the battery, which can be easily replaced. Reassemble everything by reversing the steps taken, and you're done!
