This guide shows how to remove and replace the alternator belt or serpentine belt on the seventh series Volkswagen Golf with a 1.6 TDI engine. First, remove the front wheel by lifting the vehicle; then remove the right wheel arch liner and the lower engine cover to access the alternator belt.

At this point, use a 16 mm socket spanner to loosen the belt tensioner, allowing you to remove the belt; replace it with a new one of the correct type, ensuring it is fitted correctly and then rotate it by hand.
