How to Replace the Timing Belt

The following video explains step by step how to replace the timing belt on a Volkswagen Jetta (the same procedure applies to similar engines). In this case, the entire timing system has been isolated, making access and related operations easier. After releasing its clips, remove the cover that protects the belt. Loosen and unscrew the 10 mm bolts of the tensioner cover and, using a 9 mm Allen key, the central cover that protects the belt. Use metal pins to lock the pulleys by inserting them into the holes near the hub to 'memorise' their exact position for when the new belt is installed. Now you can remove the belt: using a 15 mm ratchet, loosen the central bolt and complete the operation with a 6 mm Allen key. Also, remove the 13 mm bolt from the roller located just below and take it out. Now the belt appears much looser. It can be extracted simply by slightly blocking the tensioner with a pin. After removing its 15 mm bolt, also dismantle the worn tensioner and the 13 mm bolt from the roller above it. Clean or replace the water pump pulley located just below the tensioner. Take a new tensioner and install it exactly like the old one. Loosen it a bit, then insert the new belt and, with your hands, position it so that it aligns with the timing marks. The video also shows the replacement of the two small old rollers (upper and lower) with two completely new ones. At this point, the tensioner is released and correctly timed. The pins near the pulleys must also be removed. Once everything has been returned to its previous state, you should manually check the operation of the timing system: using a 15 mm socket and an extension, rotate the timing system clockwise by acting on the lowest pulley.
