When to change the timing chain on a Polo 1.2 petrol

The Volkswagen Polo does not have a timing belt, but a chain. To be honest, German brands, including BMW, Mercedes, Opel, Audi, and of course Volkswagen, prefer chains over belts, although not on all vehicles. This is because the chain is more robust and can withstand greater loads. A belt is changed at 50,000 miles or 10 years (check the owner's manual, as each manufacturer has its own rules), while a chain, if well maintained, lasts the same as the engine, needing replacement only when you hear squeaking or strange noises. Conversely, replacing a belt costs less (around £500/£600) compared to a chain, which requires more extensive work (it can easily reach £1,000).
