Instructions for Water Pump Replacement

Model: Volkswagen Transporter T4, MK 4 - Years 1990-2003

Start by unscrewing the cap of the expansion tank to relieve any pressure in the cooling system; lift the vehicle on a hydraulic lift and access the right wheel arch to loosen the auxiliary belt tensioner to slip it off the pulleys; lock the water pump pulley (the central one) with the appropriate tool and unscrew the corresponding fixing bolts to remove it; before removing the water pump, drain the cooling system through the designated drain plug located just behind the air conditioning compressor; once drained, re-screw the cap applying grease to the O-ring seal; then proceed to remove the fixing bolts of the pump and extract it from its seat using a screwdriver to lever along the edges (some liquid will still escape); clean the pump seat thoroughly and then reverse the process to install the new pump.
