If you want to replace the engine oil and the corresponding filter on a Volvo (850, S70 or V70), here’s how to do it. Start by checking the oil level using the dipstick. Unscrew the top cap of the oil sump, then go under the vehicle (properly raised with a ramp or jack) and, using a 17 mm spanner, remove (wearing gloves) the bottom plug to drain the old oil into a collection container. While the oil drains, replace the old filter. Take a new one and fill it with oil (this will prevent the engine from running without lubricant on the first start after the oil change). Now, using a socket or adjustable spanner for the filter cap, remove the old filter and fit the new one (it should generally be changed every 30,000 miles). As the last step, after tightening the bottom plug of the sump, pour in the new oil (approximately 6.5 litres).
