What to Do if the Power Steering of the Alfa Romeo 159 JTD is Hard and Noisy

On Alfa 159s, it can frequently happen that the power steering becomes hard and noisy: the first thing to do is to change the oil reservoir for the steering. As seen in the video, this component is located at the front of the engine bay, so it is sufficient to unscrew the three bolts found on the sides to remove it, then disconnect the two hoses (supply and return) located underneath, but first, try to recover most of the oil from the reservoir, which would otherwise be lost. The recovery hose has a quick connector, and once removed, turn it upwards to prevent oil from spilling into the engine, and connect a rubber tube to the rigid hose to direct the oil into a container while someone starts the engine. Usually, there is no more than one litre to one and a half litres in the system. After this, clean the hoses well, reconnect them, and then restore the level in the reservoir. The vehicle should then be lifted at the front and the steering wheel turned 5 or 6 times on each side, with the engine off so that the system fills up. Then you can lower the vehicle and start the engine. At this point, the noise should be gone.
