Engine Oil and Filter Replacement
Model: BMW Serie 3
E46
- Years 1998-2006
This tutorial explains how to replace the oil and filter on a BMW 3 Series. The same procedure can be applied to both BMW vehicles with M54 and M52 engines. You will need a new filter, a new gasket, a 17 mm socket, a ratchet wrench to remove the oil pan plug, and of course, new engine oil. First, remove the oil pan plug, then, using the ratchet wrench, loosen the filter container cap and unscrew it completely by hand. Using the 17 mm socket, unscrew the oil pan plug (located under the vehicle) and collect the used oil in a container. While the old oil drains, remove the used filter, take off the old gasket, and replace both with new products. Remember to lubricate the new gasket slightly before securing it to the plug. After installing the new filter and reattaching its cap, reinstall the oil pan plug (use a new washer for the oil pan plug); as the last step, pour in the new oil (about 5 quarts, but it's always good to consult the manual) and check the level with the dipstick.
