Check Hydraulic Actuation Systems

Model: BMW Serie 5 E39 - Years 1995-2003
Part: Checks and maintenance

The vehicle's engine is equipped with several hydraulic actuation systems (such as valve lift) that utilize engine oil pressure to operate. Wear on these devices and deterioration of the oil can lead to play and resulting noise over time. To assess the efficiency of these systems, check the engine oil level, start the engine, and let it idle until it reaches operating temperature. At this point, accelerate and maintain it for a few seconds at 3,000 RPM.
