This article explains how to unlock the automatic transmission of the BMW X6 in case of a transmission failure emergency. This procedure takes less than 1 minute and requires no tools; it will allow the car to be loaded onto a tow truck.

To unlock the transmission, get into the car, turn on the ignition, press and hold the brake pedal, press the side button on the transmission, and while holding the brake, shift the gear lever forward and keep it pushed forward until it sets to N. At this point, release the brake, then press it again and disengage the electric parking brake.
