Removing Airbag for Steering Wheel Replacement

Replacing the steering wheel requires skill, as it involves the delicate task of removing the airbag. The first step is to deactivate the airbag system. Usually, there is a switch located on the dashboard that allows you to deactivate all installed airbags; this device is clearly marked, and if in doubt, refer to the vehicle's owner's manual. The necessary tools are: a 5/8" Allen wrench, a puller, and a 13/16" socket wrench. Start by loosening the retaining screws of the airbag module, accessible through the holes on the sides of the steering column using the Allen wrench. Loosen the screws and carefully pull the airbag cover away, releasing the plastic clips. Once the airbag is removed, disconnect the two connectors located on the back by releasing the small plastic tabs with a tool. Be careful not to drop the airbag module, keep it away from intense heat sources, do not carry it away, and do not shake or hit it, as it may explode. Carefully remove the screw on the column and take out the wiring. Now you can remove the steering wheel retaining screw using a 13/16" socket wrench with an extension. Partially unscrew the bolt but do not remove it completely for safety. Insert the puller into the holes, being careful not to drop the screws. Tighten the puller, and when the steering wheel comes off, remove the puller. Remove the steering wheel by hand, taking great care with the airbag wires.
