Replacing the Water Thermostat on a 2004 Citroen C3 Diesel

The thermostat, known as the thermostatic valve, activates the circulation of coolant between the engine block and the radiator: as the coolant in the engine block overheats to cool the engine, the coolant inside the radiator is cooled by the fans. Once a certain temperature is reached, the valve opens to allow cooler liquid into the engine and hotter liquid into the radiator, cycling continuously. Constant contact with liquid, especially if it is just water, can cause rust and block the valve mechanism, necessitating replacement. The valve is located on the side of the engine, just behind the oil filter housing, but to access it, you should remove the battery. Drain the coolant, disconnect the hoses attached to the valve, and then unscrew the fixing bolts to complete the removal.
