Dodge Avenger - Video tutorial

Model: Dodge Avenger MK 1 - Years 2008-2013
Part: Engine
Operation: Check the noise coming from the engine

If you hear a noise coming from the engine compartment when starting the engine, open the front hood and first try to identify the area of the engine from which the noise is coming. Generally it is very likely that the noise depends on some pulley driven by the auxiliary belt: it will therefore be advisable to carefully check which of these is attributable to the fault. A first method to analyze the noise can be to use a car stethoscope: then put on the stethoscope and bring the rod close to the various pulleys trying to perceive which of these is the noisiest; a long screwdriver can also be used instead of the stethoscope. If you then have doubts that the noise may be internal to the engine, disconnect the auxiliary belt so that no pulley can rotate and start the engine. Excluding internal noises, once the belt has been removed, manually move the individual pulleys to check if any of these have any play: usually the noise is attributable to the alternator pulley or to the plastic pulleys of the tensioner or idler pulley.
