Before purchasing a classic Fiat 500, always ask for full transparency: restoration photos, documentation, and if possible, a video call to see the car live. If there are no restoration photos, be cautious.

Key checks to perform: 1) Verify that the chassis number stamped in the engine bay matches the one in the logbook. 2) Bodywork: Check that the paint is shiny and even, without bubbles, rust, or "orange peel". 3) Filler: Use a magnet wrapped in tape to check high-risk areas (sills, wheel arches, rear crossmember).

If the magnet does not stick, there is too much filler. 4) Door hinges: Move the door; if the car moves too, the hinges are good; if the door has play, they need replacing. 5) Undercarriage and metalwork: Lie under the car and check that the undercarriage is not rotten or patched with covering material. 6) Interior: Check the upholstery, springs, and foam of the seats, and the rear bench (lift the seat base and check for rust). 7) Battery compartment: Acid can corrode the metal, check under the battery. 8) Wheel arch: The edge should be straight and clean. 9) Engine bay: Look for oil leaks, check the sump, and ensure there is oil in the engine! 10) Locks and window winders: Ensure they function properly. 11) Stub axles: Grab the wheel and pull; if you hear noises or feel play, the stub axles are worn and the car will drift.

In summary: focus on hidden parts, not just aesthetics. A good restoration is recognised by attention to detail that is not visible.
