The 500 we are working on is an "F" model from 1968; they vary a lot depending on the year of production. We start by disconnecting the fuse box and removing the bracket that holds the brake fluid container, then we free the tank and empty it of its liquid - which we will dispose of properly - then we start working around the wheel hubs, removing the grease cup. Remember that the nuts on the driver's side and passenger's side turn in two different ways! Pull off the drum. Now the brake shoes are exposed, which we will remove by levering from the back. Now we need to remove the cylinder. To work on it better, we need to completely remove the plate from the back. It's not easy because it's a very old system. Let the remaining oil in the cylinder drain. Don't lose the washer! We do the same thing on the other side, remembering that the nut on the passenger side is right-handed. Then the nuts holding the pump attached to the pedal must be unscrewed, which we can remove.

How do you open the fuel flap of the Volkswagen Golf 5?
