If the manual gear lever of your car or van is hard to use and engages with difficulty (in this case, it is a Ford Transit MK7, but this can apply to any vehicle), the problem is often the linkage of the gearbox. For this operation, you will need an assistant to move the gear lever while you grease the mechanism from inside the engine.

In this case, there are two selectors: one moves in one direction, while the other moves in the opposite direction. By moving it, you can see how stiff it is. Use lithium grease: any type will do, but this one particularly resists heat, so it will last longer (a preventive clean of the gears wouldn’t hurt) and you will see that the lever now moves with ease.
