In this video, see how to easily remove the shift knob from a Land Rover Range Rover Sport L320. Start the engine and, with the vehicle stationary, shift the gear lever into neutral. Then, turn off the engine and pull the knob straight up with all your strength to detach it from the shaft.

It usually comes off without much difficulty, and nothing breaks even when applying significant force, as the materials are sturdy. You can find a replacement leather knob, for example, on Auto-doc under item 3707A0004 for $3.49 (+$9.90 shipping).
