The application of the turbocharger to diesel engines has represented an innovative solution not only to improve performance but also to enhance efficiency. The operating principle, shown in the video, is relatively simple as the device simply utilises the flow of exhaust gases to spin the blades of a turbine (the specific geometry - twist - allows for maximum utilisation of this flow) whose shaft is then connected to that of a compressor that compresses the air intended for intake, increasing its pressure and consequently the flow rate. The system is then completed by a series of valves (pneumatic or electric) that regulate flow rates and pressures to prevent spikes that could compromise the operation of the engine and the turbocharger itself.
