How to Change the Rear Differential Oil on a Nissan X-Trail MK1

This is a crucial operation on a Nissan X-Trail, especially if you use it for serious off-roading, and should be done every 37,000 to 62,000 miles. If you do heavy off-roading, do it even more frequently. Before starting, take a short drive to warm up the oil, then safely lift the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the fill plug before draining; if you drain the differential and then cannot remove the fill plug, you will be in trouble. Position a container under the drain plug and let the oil flow out, then replace it without over-tightening. Connect the pump to the fill tube and pump until the oil starts to come out of the fill hole. This ensures the level is correct. Remove the pump and quickly screw on the plug. Clean up any oil spills and dispose of the used oil at a collection centre.
