Guide to the Operation of a Hydraulic Lifter

The rocker arm is a device that maintains zero play in an internal combustion engine. If this play is not maintained, the valve and its pivot would strike against each other due to heat expansion. The hydraulic lifter, located between the camshaft and the valve of each engine, is a hollow steel cylinder that houses an internal piston. The lobed camshaft rhythmically presses against the lifter, which transmits motion to the valve either through a pushrod that actuates it or via direct contact with the valve stem. This piston is held at the outer limit of its stroke by a strong spring. The guide is designed to compensate for this lack.
