To open the bonnet of the Smart ForTwo, pull the two tabs located on the sides of the front grille, just above the bumper. Once these tabs are pulled, the front bonnet panel will be unlocked.

This allows you not only to unlock it but also to completely remove it for access to the components underneath. To close it, simply reposition the panel and secure it with the appropriate clips at the front.
