Check Starter Motor Functionality

Once the starter motor is removed (disconnect the battery during removal), you can test its functionality on the bench using a booster or a battery: secure the motor in a vice, connect the earth to the vice, and power the relay with the positive. The overhaul of the starter motor often only requires replacing the brush holder, but it is good practice to disassemble it for cleaning (especially the commutator) and greasing during reassembly. Clean the commutator with fine sandpaper and then use a small knife to clean the gap between each segment.
