How to Replace the Rear Shock Absorbers on a Toyota Aygo

To replace the rear shock absorbers on your Toyota Aygo, first, remove the rear wheels. Secure the vehicle safely on axle stands; do not rely solely on your jack and place the wheels under the vehicle. Open the boot and remove the trim from the inner side pillar, using a screwdriver to take out the plastic clips. Unscrew the fastening element of the rear boot trim and disconnect it. Remove the cap from the upper shock absorber mounting and unscrew it using a spanner. Now clean the shock absorber fastening points with a wire brush, then spray with WD-40. Next, support the rear suspension crossmember. Using a 17 mm socket, tighten the lower shock absorber fastening element. Remove the dust cover and bump stop from the shock absorber, and replace them if necessary. Before installation, the shock absorber should be bled manually 4 to 5 times. Now install the dust cover and dynamic bump stop on the new shock absorber. Treat the mounting seats with a wire brush and WD-40. Then place the shock absorber in the wheel arch and secure it. Tighten the lower shock absorber fastening element well with a 17 mm socket. Screw in the upper shock absorber fastening elements. You can now remove the rear support. While you’re at it, clean the wheel hub before remounting the wheels and apply some copper grease. Refit the wheels, tighten the upper fastening, and replace the boot trim. Refit the wheels. Job done.
