This video explains clearly and simply the issues with the PSA 1.2 Puretech petrol engine. Fundamentally, the problem with this engine is the timing belt that operates submerged in engine oil. This oil can become contaminated with petrol due to the belt, causing the oil to lose some of its lubricating properties, which will start to damage the belt.

Small pieces of the belt itself will mix with the engine oil, obstructing the vacuum pump, which in turn will cause the brake pedal to harden. In 2017, designers realised the problem and modified the belt, but not much changed; in 2021, a massive recall was initiated by Stellantis regarding all Peugeot, Citroen, DS, and Opel models, which only concerned the hardening of the brake pedal.
