How does a starter motor work

The starter motor is a direct current motor that converts electrical energy from the battery into mechanical energy; it also has a solenoid inside that closes the electrical circuit to power the electric motor and pushes the pinion towards the flywheel gear. When the start button is pressed, an electrical signal is sent to the solenoid, which activates pushing the pinion towards the flywheel gear; at the same time, the solenoid closes the electrical circuit, powering the electric motor that rotates the pinion, which in turn rotates the flywheel; this rotates the crankshaft, starting the internal combustion cycle. At this point, the speed of the flywheel exceeds that of the starter motor, and a freewheel mechanism disengages the pinion from the gear wheel, preventing the pinion from rotating too quickly. At this point, the solenoid also deactivates the electrical circuit.
