How does the starter motor work? This video illustrates it: when you turn the key or press the button, the battery sends current to the electric motor, which engages the flywheel (the gear wheel of the engine) causing it to turn. Once the minimum speed is reached, the engine starts on its own, and the motor disengages. Signs of wear include difficulty starting, such as repeated clicks without starting; metallic noises (damaged belt or gears); smoke or burnt smell (internal short circuit). If the motor is damaged, replacing it is essential, and in most vehicles, it is not even that difficult. It is usually not an expensive component.
