In this video, the problems of the Stellantis Pure Tech 3-cylinder engine are illustrated, a very talked-about engine because of the oil-bath timing belt: it is mounted on several models of the group. The oil-bath timing belt was designed to reduce noise and friction, but especially in the early versions it showed all its vulnerability. The main cause is oil contamination. In fact, during short journeys, the fuel that is not completely burned mixes with the engine oil, reducing its lubricating properties, which also leads to faster wear; this wear releases rubber particles, which further contaminate the oil; the contaminated oil in turn clogs the filter, lubrication ducts, and compromises the oil pump. In subsequent versions, the belts have been reinforced, software updated, and more frequent oil changes recommended. It is essential to keep an eye on the condition of the belt to avoid bigger problems with the engine, also checking for excessive fuel consumption, without neglecting the oil warning light. The timing belt breaking can have disastrous consequences, bending valves, damaging pistons, and requiring high repair costs. Not to mention the danger resulting from losing control of the vehicle. It is therefore essential to carry out preventive maintenance, changing the oil every 10,000 km, and checking the belt at every oil change.
