The false myth of pre-filling the oil filter

The myth of pre-filling the oil filter says that you should always pre-fill it before installation to avoid dry starting the engine. But the reality of modern engines is different: by pre-filling it, unfiltered oil enters directly into the engine, and contaminants in the new filter bypass the filtration system, causing damage to sensitive engine components. Instead, we should lubricate the gasket, which ensures a perfect seal and facilitates future filter removal. The correct procedure is to install the filter dry, start the engine normally after an oil change: the oil pump will fill in a few seconds. Modern engines have more efficient oil pumps, and lubrication systems quickly fill the filter. The rare exceptions only concern some high-performance racing engines, or horizontally positioned filters.
