What happens if you put the wrong fuel in? Scenario 1: petrol in a diesel engine. This is the most serious scenario, as petrol is drier than diesel and has less lubricating power. The injection system (high-pressure pump and injectors) relies on diesel for lubrication. The car may start and can drive a few miles, during which it literally destroys the injection system, causing damage worth thousands of pounds. If you realise this before starting the engine, do not even turn the key; call a recovery service and take the car to a mechanic who will perform a complete fuel system flush. The second scenario, diesel in a petrol engine, is less severe: diesel is denser and less flammable than petrol, so the car will not start or will stall immediately. There is no damage to the engine or the injection system; simply flush the tank and refill with petrol. Do not insist on starting the engine; call the recovery service; the workshop will flush the tank and then you can refuel.
