How to properly use an automatic gearbox

For those accustomed to a clutch and manual shifting, an automatic can feel somewhat awkward. However, it is becoming increasingly common, even in affordable cars, so it's useful to learn how to use it effectively. Accelerate steadily, avoiding sudden jolts; engage forward or reverse only when the vehicle is completely stationary – not while the car is still moving; minimise use of the gearbox, avoiding keeping your foot on the brake when it's not needed to prevent overheating; try to use manual mode sparingly, if available; the automatic is designed to make the best choices. Never press the brake and accelerator at the same time, as this is an error that can damage the transmission. Do not pull the handbrake before selecting "P"; instead, select "P" first and then apply the handbrake if necessary.
