How to Clean the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

The MAF sensor measures the amount of air drawn into the engine to regulate fuel injection. When it gets dirty, the engine loses power, idle becomes irregular, and fuel consumption increases. To clean it, locate the sensor between the air filter and the intake manifold. Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the lock. Remove the sensor from its housing (using a screwdriver or spanner). Caution: the internal filaments are very delicate; do not touch them with fingers or objects. Use a specific MAF spray, such as LiquiMoly with Amazon code B00295EEBK for £11.72, with free delivery for Prime customers. Spray from 10-15 cm away in short bursts, rotating the sensor to clean all surfaces. Allow to air dry for 10-20 minutes. Refit the sensor, ensuring the flow arrow is respected, reconnect the connector, and start the engine. If the engine light was on, clear the error code with a diagnostic tool. Cleaning is recommended every 6 months or with every air filter change.
