How to Check the Vehicle MAF Sensor

The main signs of malfunction are: the check engine light coming on, increased fuel consumption, reduced engine power, inability to start the engine, loss of traction, and unstable idle. If any of these signs appear, proceed with various diagnostics to determine if the mass airflow sensor needs replacing. The first attempt is to disconnect the sensor from the engine, start the engine, and then reconnect the sensor; if the vehicle returns to normal operation, the part does not need replacing. The second attempt is to start the engine and move the connector seal to access the terminals and connect test leads from a multimeter. Set the multimeter to DC voltage measurement mode with a limit of 20 volts. Once the device is in resistance mode, you can measure the required readings. The third attempt is to use the OBD port connected to the vehicle. Simply scan the intake system to check its status. If one or more error codes appear on the device, a second test may be necessary or the sensor may need replacing. The more professional the tester, the more likely it is to provide various error codes; it is very important to have the user and maintenance manual on hand. Once the cause of the malfunction is found, you can proceed to clean the sensor. Open the bonnet and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery; then disconnect the MAF sensor. Remove the mass airflow sensor and clean it with cleaner, allowing the part to air dry before reinstalling it. Start the vehicle to test the sensor's operation.
