The starter motor is an electric motor that connects and turns the flywheel to initiate the movement of the pistons to create the necessary compression to start the car. Below are some signs you may notice when the starter motor needs to be replaced. Often, the first sign of starting problems is hearing a loud click or a series of clicks when you turn the key. This is the sound of the starter motor engaging but not turning. If you also hear grinding noises when trying to start the car, this could indicate a problem with the starter, likely caused by a gear that may have lost one or more teeth.
