Do sports air filters increase performance? The air filter serves to trap impurities that enter from outside and go into the turbocharger. Traditional filters are made of paper, are very cheap, and are changed on average every 6,000 to 12,000 miles. Sports filters are made of cotton and filter much less than traditional ones, allowing more air to pass through. The concept of the air filter is a remnant from the 1980s when engines were naturally aspirated, meaning more air entered and performance increased (this still occurs in motorcycles). In modern cars, there is a mass airflow sensor that measures the amount of air that must enter the engine, and if more air enters, it cuts it down. Therefore, in terms of performance, a sports filter will not change anything. The improvement is that the filter is reusable; you can wash and oil it (but this is not always advisable as the oil can damage the mass airflow sensor) and refit it. There are also polyester filters that only need to be cleaned with compressed air.
