Operation: How does the particulate filter work in diesel engines?

This short video tutorial explains how the particulate filter works: if you have a car with a diesel engine, you have surely seen the FAP light on the instrument panel or the engine light on. The particulate filter is a real filter, with the peculiarity that it is able to clean itself; but what does it retain and how does it clean itself? The particulate filter retains PM10, which is the acronym for harmful solid particles that are created during combustion, and allows the flow of exhaust gases to pass through, thus achieving a reduction in polluting emissions. Engineers have developed a phenomenal self-regeneration system: the differential pressure sensor monitors the data upstream and downstream of the particulate filter; as the filter becomes clogged with solid particles, a certain backpressure value is created. When this value reaches a certain limit, the engine control unit will initiate the regeneration process. The particulate filter is based on the use of additives that allow regeneration of the filter at lower temperatures compared to other particulate filters. In conclusion, to avoid problems, it is very necessary to respect the regeneration procedures required by the vehicle during driving; if, on the other hand, the problem persists and the light remains on, it is necessary to take the vehicle to a mechanic.
