How does the Volkswagen VAQ limited-slip differential work?

In this video, we see how the VAQ limited-slip differential works, which is a front-wheel drive traction control system used in some cars from the Volkswagen Group, such as the Golf GTI and Cupra Leon. Its operation is based on a system of electronically controlled clutch plates, which distribute the driving torque between the two front wheels in a variable manner. Under normal grip conditions, the VAQ differential behaves like a normal open differential, allowing the wheels to turn at different speeds in a curve. However, when one of the wheels loses grip, the system intervenes by partially or fully locking the differential, transferring the driving torque to the wheel with the most grip. The advantages offered by this system compared to a traditional one are certainly: greater effectiveness, because the electronic control allows for precise modulation of the torque transferred between the wheels, optimizing traction; greater drivability, because the system is able to anticipate grip losses and intervene without generating backlash or abrupt reactions on the steering; furthermore, the VAQ does not have friction parts that can wear out over time. However, it also has some disadvantages: certainly a higher cost, and given its complexity, the VAQ requires a dedicated control unit for its management.
