How to replace the drum brakes on the Volkswagen Up?

Replacing the drum brakes on the Volkswagen Up is a somewhat complex operation. Open the bonnet and unscrew the brake fluid cap, lift the rear end and remove the rear wheels. Unscrew the screws that secure the drum to the hub and fully release the handbrake. Remove the hub/bearing assembly for full access, and using pliers, dismantle the retaining cups to unlock the spring bars. Remove the bars, springs, and shoes, then disconnect the handbrake cable from the lever. It is advisable to replace the wheel cylinder by loosening the brake pipe and then cleaning the backplate with a wire brush and brake cleaner. Install the new cylinder and reattach the brake pipe, lubricate the sliding points of the shoes with specific grease, and reassemble the new kit of shoes, springs, and bars (available on Amazon with code B0BNV7W1SS for £62.48 with free delivery in a few days). After this, the braking system must be bled to remove air from the new cylinder. After bleeding, pump the brake pedal several times to self-adjust the shoes; then, screw the brake fluid reservoir cap back on, reattach the wheels, and lower the car.
