How to Remove the Airbag from a Volkswagen Golf 5

If you need to remove the steering wheel for replacing, for example, the airbag ribbon or the steering angle sensor, a common fault on this model, the first thing to remove is certainly the steering wheel airbag. This device is secured with a spring system, so to release it, you must access the springs through the appropriate holes behind the spokes of the steering wheel: you can use a mirror or a smartphone camera to assist. Once you have accessed the spring, use a flat screwdriver to lever and release it, then repeat the operation on the other spoke. Move the airbag away to finally disconnect the detonator connector: it is advisable to perform this step with the battery disconnected.
