Volkswagen New Beetle - Video tutorial

Model: Volkswagen New Beetle MK 2, 9C - Years 1999-2012
Part: Engine
Operation: Check ignition times and advance adjustment by means of a stroboscopic gun

The stroboscopic gun is a useful tool to check and possibly adjust the ignition times and in particular the advance. It is essential to correctly connect the gun as indicated below: - power the gun by connecting the black and red pliers respectively to the negative and positive poles of the battery; - connect the other red clamp to the negative pole of the battery; - connect the inductive clamp on the spark plug cable of the first cylinder about 10 cm from the distributor, orienting the arrow towards the spark plug (the arrow indicates the direction of the current, therefore from the coil to the spark plug). To measure and possibly adjust the advance, start the engine and let it idle until it reaches a regular speed. At this point, use the adjustment keys to bring the display to the number of degrees indicated by the manufacturer's data; then illuminate the TDC notches on the pulley and on the crankcase: thanks to the stroboscopic effect, the pulley will appear to be stationary and it will be possible to read. The notches must coincide within the tolerances allowed by the manufacturer, otherwise it is necessary to orient the distributor and check that the timing belt has not skipped a tooth.

Handbrake adjustment on Ford Ecosport

First remove the plastic profile at the base of the gear lever. To do this, slightly widen the side edges and carefully lift it to release it. There is no need to remove it completely, just move it forward to avoid bother. Now remove the plastic center console around the handbrake by first working from the rear to release it and lifting it until the brake lever passes. Also in this case it is not necessary to remove it completely but, paying attention to the connected cables, it can be stowed in front of the passenger seat. At this point we notice that at the base of the handbrake lever, on the front, we find a nut. By acting on it, with a 10 wrench, we can adjust the brake force, increasing it by turning the nut clockwise, or decreasing it by turning it counterclockwise. Once adjusted, the center console can be repositioned first, pressing lightly to engage it, and then the profile of the gearbox base.
