Check Ignition Timing and Advance Adjustment Using a Stroboscopic Gun

Model: Volkswagen New Beetle MK 2, 9C - Years 1999-2012

The stroboscopic gun is a useful tool for checking and possibly adjusting ignition timing, particularly the advance. It is essential to connect the gun correctly as follows:
- power the gun by connecting the black and red clips to the negative and positive terminals of the battery, respectively;
- connect the other red clip to the negative terminal of the battery;
- attach the inductive clip to the spark plug wire of the first cylinder about 4 inches from the distributor, orienting the arrow towards the spark plug (the arrow indicates the direction of the current, from the coil to the spark plug).
To measure and possibly adjust the advance, start the engine and let it idle until it reaches a steady speed. At this point, use the adjustment buttons to set the display to the number of degrees indicated by the manufacturer's data; then illuminate the marks on the TDC on the pulley and on the timing cover: due to the stroboscopic effect, the pulley will appear stationary, allowing for a reading. The marks must align within the tolerances allowed by the manufacturer; otherwise, adjust the distributor and check that the timing belt has not skipped a tooth.
